A record

Points a domain to the server's IPv4 address.

A record is a DNS entry that points a domain to a specific server IPv4 address. It decides where your site "lives". The equivalent for IPv6 addresses is the AAAA record. After changing an A record you must wait for propagation, which depends on the TTL.
